Dance as an industry artform in its modern conception is often relegated to the idea of background entertainment for musicians, or high stage show for the cultured, there is no in between and many people in popular culture have trouble connecting with the true power and essence of this art. It is often disrespected and made to seem less impactful than it actually is.

You, as an artist intimately connected to dance and movement, are surely connected to the secret vaults of power hidden inside of the body. But how do you allow yourself to express that force in an industry so overwhelmed with technique and physicality? You return to what’s real.

Before the dominating influence of mind OVER matter in western culture, where our disregard for the body and its sacred rhythms became pronounced, we once lived as people in reverence towards the mysteries inside movement and primal communication.

We utilized dance as a sacred vehicle to organize and influence our tribal communities, to spread myths and stories that would inspire and transform, to enact rites of passage, to move grief and illness from our body, and to create balance and order in our societies.

It was the influence of harmful politics that stole our respect and reverence towards rhythm. Did you know that the Holy Roman Empire actually banned the use of drums up until the Crusades, because they were supposedly connected to the licentious devil? This has been our culture’s view of the body and dance in this dark and veiled time, but now you as an artist get to reclaim the old ways and restore the truth of the body in its glory.

It is through this restoration, through the tutelage of myself and Jasmine in our varying specialties, that you will begin to shift culture back towards a place of bodily respect and reverence in the greater movement of dance.
